Why IndoTeak

Good teak is hard to find. So we went to the source.

    It started with a surf trip.

    Our founder, Frank Ragen, spent years surfing Indonesia and fell in love with the place and its craftsmanship. So he built his own factory there.

    Salvaged, never felled.

    Every board is teak that has already stood for 100 to 500 years in old colonial homes, warehouses and bridges across Indonesia. It is taken down by hand, and no tree is cut for it.

    Old growth: the best of teak.

    Teak that grew slowly for generations is denser and harder than fast-grown plantation teak, and rich in the natural oils, minerals and silica that help it resist moisture, insects and weather. It is why teak is one of the most weather-resistant woods on earth, at home on a pool deck or in a shower.

    Teak all the way through.

    Most engineered floors are a face of wood glued over plywood. Ours is reclaimed teak in every layer: a wear layer on top, a core of smaller pieces laid across the board with the tongue and groove milled in, and a backing laid lengthwise, relief-cut underneath. All three layers of reclaimed teak, for ultimate stability.

    Our own factory. Stocked in San Diego.

    Craftsmen who have worked teak for generations sort, grade and match every board in our own factory in Indonesia. Then it crosses the Pacific to our headquarters in San Diego, where it is stocked and ready to ship.
