Tile Installation Guide
The material
What are IndoTeak tiles made of?
Every IndoTeak tile is made from 100% FSC®-certified reclaimed Indonesian teak. It is real solid teak, with the grain, tone and character of the original wood.
Are they sustainable?
Yes. Reclaimed teak gives existing wood a second life instead of cutting new trees. It is FSC®-certified, and the collection carries our “Zero Trees Harmed” mark.
Why teak and not another wood?
Teak is dense, durable and naturally rich in oils. Its natural grain and character bring warmth to a surface.
What styles are available?
What finishes do you offer?
The Teak Tile Collection has Natural Smooth and Natural Patina finishes. Awaken Wood designs, Oasis, Tide and Dune, come in Smooth Natural. Custom colors are available on request. Check the options shown for your chosen product.
Will every tile look the same?
No. Reclaimed teak varies naturally in grain and tone. Mix tiles from several boxes during installation to distribute that variation evenly across the surface.
Planning & installation
How much tile should I order?
Measure the area in square feet and divide by the coverage per box shown for your chosen product. Add 10–15% for cuts, pattern layout and future repairs. Complex patterns and rooms with many corners should lean toward the higher end.
How thick are the tiles?
Thickness varies by design. Check the specifications for your selected tile when planning transitions, trim and outlet extenders.
Do the tiles need to acclimate before installation?
Yes. Allow the tiles to acclimate on location, in the room where they will be installed, for 4–5 days before installation.
Can a regular tile installer install it? What surface does it go on?
The installation process uses thin-set and grout. The substrate must be clean, level and dry. Acceptable substrates include cured concrete, cement backer-board or gypsum board. Follow the Tile Installation Guide for installation details.
What thin-set should I use?
Use a good-quality thin-set mortar, distributed evenly across the substrate, and allow it to dry completely before grouting. Some applications may use a wood-flooring adhesive with a built-in 2-in-1 waterproofing membrane at the installer’s discretion. See the Tile Installation Guide.
What type of grout should be used?
Use a single-component, ready-to-use acrylic or urethane grout, such as MAPEI Flexcolor CQ. Epoxy grout is also an option. Avoid traditional water-mixed cement grout.
Is grouting teak different from grouting ceramic tile?
Clean grout residue from the surface quickly. Do not let haze or residue cure on the face of the wood, as it can damage the finish. Work in small sections and wipe as you go.
How do I cut and drill the tiles?
Use a wet saw with a sharp ceramic blade, or a miter saw with a carbide blade. Standard woodworking drill bits are appropriate for drilling.
Care
Does the tile need to be sealed?
IndoTeak tile comes pre-sealed from the factory. For any application-specific sealing or finish requirements, contact our team before installation.
How do I clean and maintain IndoTeak tile?
Use a pH-neutral cleaner, such as Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner, and a soft cloth or mop. Avoid bleach, ammonia, acidic or harsh chemical cleaners, and abrasive pads, which can damage the finish.
